Vittorina Sbaraglini was a prominent figure in post-war Assisi society. She had an austere and regal appearance (once, during a visit to a boarding school, she was mistaken for Queen Margherita of Italy), which masked a deeply principled spirit—independent and rebellious at heart. Born in 1911 , her adolescence was marked by the hardship her family endured due to her father’s political beliefs. The Honorable Giuseppe Sbaraglini, , one of the founders of the Socialist Party in Umbria, was persecuted by Mussolini’s Fascist regime.Despite these difficulties, Vittorina completed her studies at the prestigious “Orientale” University in Naples. After the end of World War II, she returned to Assisi and dedicated herself to teaching French at the local middle school for over 30 years. Every Assisian born between 1935 and 1975 was her student, and to all she was simply “Madame.” Her passion for the French language and her uncompromising teaching style made her both feared and deeply admired. During her classes, speaking Italian was strictly forbidden. Unconcerned with hypocritical conventions and indifferent to gossip, she always lived her life freely, alongside her beloved and respected husband, Luigino Pennacchi.. A Catholic man and a secular woman, she would accompany him to Sunday Mass, but would wait at the door, refusing to enter the church. He was rooted in the land, while she was curious about the world. In the 1960s, she fearlessly embarked—without her husband—on travels that were truly extraordinary for a woman of her time: from Japan and Thailand to Mexico… These were the grand voyages of a bygone era, from which only a few tiny photographs remain, showing exotic places and her colorful evening gowns for gala nights aboard ocean liners. But in our hearts, as her granddaughters, the most cherished memories are of the glorious Christmases celebrated in the grand hall of the Sbaraglini home, which she would decorate with exquisite care and elegance. She passed away in her nineties on, just after New Year’s, having celebrated the holidays with her usual grace. She left us this beautiful residence, and we hope to share with our guests a little of the elegance… freedom… and touch of madness that she embodied.
