Bernardo da Quintavalle († 1241) is remembered as the first and most devoted companion of Saint Francis of Assisi, as well as the original owner of the palace that still bears his name today. Born into a noble and wealthy family of Assisi, Bernardo was a cultivated and respected man, a jurist by training and a prominent figure within the city’s elite.
His life changed profoundly after meeting Francis. Deeply moved by Francis’ radical embrace of poverty, Bernardo felt compelled to question his own beliefs and way of life. One night, he invited Francis into his home as a guest. Together, they read passages from the Gospel, and those words led Bernardo to make a life-altering decision: to renounce all his possessions. He distributed his wealth to the poor and chose to follow Francis, becoming the very first of the Friars Minor.
From that moment on, Bernardo embraced a life of humility, fraternity, and service, embodying the values of simplicity and detachment from worldly ambition. He took part in spreading the Franciscan message, accompanying Francis in his preaching and bearing witness—through his own life—to the strength of a truly radical choice.
Bernardo died in Assisi around 1241 and is venerated as Blessed by the Catholic Church. His legacy endures as a powerful symbol of transformation: a man of culture and privilege who chose to abandon everything in pursuit of a greater ideal. Even today, his name evokes loyalty, courage, and the enduring power of the Franciscan spirit.
