Giuseppe Sbaraglini (1870–1947) was a prominent civic and political figure in early 20th-century Assisi. A lawyer and socialist politician, he became known for his strong anti-fascist stance during the rise of Mussolini’s regime.
In 1926, he was exiled to the island of Ustica, one of the locations used by the fascist government to isolate political dissidents, due to his outspoken criticism of fascism and his unwavering commitment to democracy and civil rights. After the fall of the regime, Sbaraglini returned to Assisi, where he was appointed the first mayor of the city in the postwar period.
