The Restoration of Palazzo Sbaraglini – House of Blessed Bernardo da Quintavalle

In 2022, an important architectural restoration began to bring back to life one of Assisi’s most historically and spiritually significant sites: Palazzo Sbaraglini, which houses the home of Blessed Bernardo da Quintavalle.
Nestled in the heart of picturesque Assisi, this residence holds a crucial place in the history of Franciscanism. It was the birthplace and home of Bernardo da Quintavalle, the first and most faithful companion of Saint Francis of Assisi. As early as the 16th century, pilgrim guides cited this house as a key spiritual destination, alongside the major Franciscan churches in and around Assisi. One of the most precious witnesses to this devotion is the perfectly preserved private chapel still found within the home.
The two-year restoration was carried out under the supervision of the Italian Heritage Authority, which oversaw all work involving historically significant elements, particularly the chapel and the original frescoes throughout the house.
The project was personally led by the Covino family, heirs of the Sbaraglini family, who lovingly and respectfully restored this noble residence and returned it to the city and its visitors.
The result is a remarkable fusion of ancient charm and modern comfort, a space where memory and innovation coexist in harmony. In the carefully restored rooms, you can still feel the presence of those who lived here through the centuries.
