About the Sbaraglini Family
Palazzo Sbaraglini: A Legacy of Nobility and Renewal
The Sbaraglini family traces its roots in Assisi back to 1279, when Tommaso di Egidio “Sbaragliati” was listed among the “buoni uomini” of the Commune and held lordship over the fortification at Piano della Pieve, with burial rights in the San Martino chapel. Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the surname evolved from “Sbaragliati” to “Sbaraglini”, while maintaining its feudal privileges throughout the Assisi countryside.
Among the family’s most storied legends is that of Corazza Sbaraglini, a captain in the service of Pope Martin V, who in 1527—besieged in his castle—allegedly escaped by leaping from a sheer cliff atop his horse. In the 20th century, Giuseppe Sbaraglini (1870–1947) emerged as an influential lawyer, socialist politician, and staunch antifascist: after his exile to Ustica for opposing the regime, he returned to become Assisi’s first post‑Liberation mayor, dedicating himself to the city’s democratic and civic rebirth.
Today, the family’s historic palace has been lovingly restored and reimagined as an elegant luxury hospitality residence in Assisi’s historic centre, where noble heritage meets modern comforts and exclusive services.
A Timeless Place Where History Breathes
Beyond its noble walls, Palazzo Sbaraglini holds something intangible—an atmosphere, a presence, a memory that lingers. Walking through its corridors means retracing the steps of centuries, where stones whisper the lives of popes, nobles, and pilgrims. Here, in a secluded chapel within the residence, took place one of the most mysterious and inspiring episodes of Assisi’s spiritual history: the Miracle of St. Francis, a moment still honored and remembered by those who visit.
The restoration of the palazzo was not simply a project of architecture—it was an act of devotion. Every fresco uncovered, every wooden beam preserved, every antique tile set back in place was guided by the desire to protect not just a building, but a story. The story of the Sbaraglini Family, of Assisi itself, and of a way of living that celebrates elegance, depth, and authenticity.
Today, Palazzo Sbaraglini opens its doors to a new generation of travelers—those who seek more than comfort. Here, history is not a backdrop but a companion. Guests are invited into a world where luxury is measured in silence, in golden light on ancient stone, in the ritual of a breakfast served under a painted ceiling. A world where every detail speaks of heritage and every corner holds a secret.
From its commanding position in the heart of the historic centre, the palazzo offers views of the Valle di Assisi, sacred landscapes unchanged for centuries. And yet, the experience is entirely of the present—intimate, refined, and unmistakably Italian. This is not a hotel. It is a living home. It is Palazzo Sbaraglini.
