Luigino Pennacchi was, for many years, the only veterinarian in Assisi. Gruff in manner but generous in spirit, he is still fondly remembered by the farmers of the valley. Day or night, he was always ready to care for their animals—at the time, essential to the livelihood of rural families.
He served in two military campaigns in Africa during the Fascist era and carried the burden of war silently. He rarely spoke of it. Yet one story from that time lives on in the family’s memory—a moment considered nothing short of a small miracle.
Before leaving for what would be his final mission, Luigino’s grandmother gave him a precious family relic: an authentic fragment of Saint Francis’s robe, which is now preserved in the private chapel of Palazzo Sbaraglini.
On September 8, 1943—the day of the armistice—Luigino was in Bologna, still wearing his uniform. Suddenly, he came face to face with a German soldier armed with a machine gun. Feeling an instinctive urge to flee, Luigino pushed the soldier aside and ran. The German, perhaps trying to avoid creating panic, did not fire.
Luigino survived, returned home safely, and resumed his work as a veterinarian—a calling he continued with dedication until his death at the age of 87.
Though Luigino was not of noble birth, he married Vittorina Sbaraglini, a member of one of Assisi’s historic noble families. In the grand hall of the Palazzo, next to the Sbaraglini family crests, a special coat of arms was created in his honor: it features a symbol of animals, celebrating his humble yet noble profession—a life lived in service, with care, dignity, and a deep respect for the living world.
